It has now been reported that Jorge Posada’s injury will not require major surgery, and he’ll likely get a chance to play again this season.

That being said, the Yankees may still need a strong presence from behind the plate until Posada is ready, and Jose Molina’s body can only hold up for 3-4 games per week.

The truly decent “in-house” options are scarce, so the Yankees may look to acquire a backup catcher via free agency or trade.

Brandon Inge would a very attractive and logical option. The athletic 32 year-old is frustrated with the Tigers’ since being relegated to a part-time role, and if he begins to burn bridges in Detroit, Inge will become very affordable. Aside from brandishing a solid glove behind the plate, Inge can play every outfield position, as well as third base and shortstop. He’s lacking in the plate discipline department, but his above-average power paired with versatility and defense would make him the ideal super utility player.  His competitive attitude would also be a perk, and he might only cost the Yankees a bullpen arm and a prospect.

If that is deemed too expensive, the Yankees could explore signing Mike Piazza or Doug Mirabelli. Piazza was never really great defensively, but his bat could help deepen the lineup and Mirabelli’s has always had a reputation for working well with pitchers. Both would be relatively cheap options, which would make them easier to dispose of once Posada is ready. Since both Piazza and Mirabelli probably know that, the Yankees’ best bet may be to go with someone like Inge that could serve as a valuable utility player and third-string catcher once Posada returns.

As far as trade candidates go, Brayan Pena and Sal Fasano would also be solid options. Both are solid behind the plate and would be quite inexpensive, but would they really be any better than Chris Stewart or Chad Moeller?
