Mid March Food for Thought PDF Print E-mail

Joe GirardiWith the only news coming from Port St. Lucie being the return of the wounded and the phenom that is Angel Pagan I thought maybe I would focus on another team this week. The decision was ratified the moment I read about a fight during a spring training game. That’s right; I’m talking about your friends and mine, the New York Yankees.

To understand the present you must be a student of the past, so let’s rewind back to last Saturday. Tampa’s Elliot Johnson broke the wrist of Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli while trying to score on a play at the plate. Joe Girardi, a former catcher himself went ballistic,

"I think it's uncalled for," Girardi said. "Spring training, you're going to get people hurt, and that's what we got, we got Cervelli hurt. It's one thing to get hit by a pitch, it gets away, but, I don't understand it."

Playing for PeanutsDarren Rovell's Sports Biz on CNBC.com is doing an NCAA style tournament with minor league logos. Each day fans will be able to select their favorite logos and move each ahead in its respective bracket. The South Georgia Peanuts are featured today. You all know the Peanuts from our friend John Fitzgerald's film Playing for Peanuts . Personally I am rooting for the Peanuts even though Wally Backman is no longer their manager. Gotta show love for a team that gave us so much good content throughout the summer of 2007. Right now the Peanuts trail the Andreson Joe's 53% to 47%. Click here to cast your vote.

If you have yet to listen to our exclusive interview with former Mets 2b and South Georgia Peanuts manager Wally Backman click here . You can also listen to the four part "Playing for Peanuts" series here
